According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Ebonyi, Nasarawa and Osun have the most vibrant SME sectors in the country, leading other states in terms of annual growth in the number of SMEs, as well as in the number of jobs created, a key aspect of economic activity.
We took a look at the National Survey of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) 2017 released by NBS, and we found that over the period of 2010 to 2017, Osun State have the highest increase in the number of SMEs in the country from 100 in 2010 to over 3,000 in 2017, growing at an annual rate of 62.6% per annum.
We also took a look the the increase in the number of jobs created by the SMEs and Kwara State had the highest growth rate for jobs creation by the SMEs achieving an annual rate of 37.1%, more than double the average national growth rate.
We then compared the two rankings of SMEs growth rate and the growth rate for the jobs created by these SMEs to find which states had the most vibrant SME sector and the results are shown below.
